Headings break the monotony of text, and enable readers to locate sections in your manual by scanning subdivisions such as chapters and headings.
Make your headings meaningful to your reader. Write as many headings as possible, but follow these guidelines:
|
Make every heading describe a task that the reader does. Don?t use a heading just to describe a feature.
| |
Capitalize the first word of each heading, or capitalize all heading words, but do not capitalize these words unless they start a heading: a, an, in, into, on, onto, to, of, the, and. For example:
|
Format Your Hard Disk
| |
Starting the Application
| |
Deleting a Number
| |
Saving Data onto Your Hard Drive
|
|
Adding Up Your Total Expenses
|
| |
Do not spell out acronyms in headings. For example:
|
Accessing Your ISP |
|
Writing Code Using the API
|
| |
Do not add punctuation at the end of the heading, for example, a colon(:) or a period(.).
| |
Don?t use an ampersand (&) in a heading. Always write ?and.?
