How to Hire a GOOD Technical Writer
Question: I'm new to this. How do I hire two good technical writers? We've already had to let a person go because she couldn't do the work at all. The resumes I've been getting and the people I've been interviewing don't seem right for the job. How can I find people who can do the job right?
Answer:
Call us at (831) 427-4117.
We started a service of finding qualified, capable technical writers (and trainers) back in 1981. We train technical writers, on site at companies, and in our on-line course, 'How to Do Tech Writing.'
Question: How do I know if the Technical Writer we hired is doing her job? What do I ask; what do I look for; what reports should I have her turn in?
Answer:
If she's really good, the writer will come into your office
with these questions (and demands):
| • |
Who's the reader? Can I go to a client site and spend a couple of days
with the users of your product?
|
| • |
Which programmer will demo the product for me?
|
| • |
I've written a documentation plan, including a profile of the reader, an
outline and preliminary table of contents, and a schedule with milestones for
the project and deadline dates. Will you please read it and sign your
approval where I've indicated?
