FrameMaker

Question: The technical writing project I'm working on uses FrameMaker for the new material, but we need to import some text from the previous release, which we did in Word. I have tried cutting and pasting the text from Word into FrameMaker, but it always comes in an anchored frame, and I cannot figure out how to get the text out of the frame and into the main flow of the FrameMaker document. How do I do this?

Answer: Now go back and create a level-2 head. For a level-2 head, you might want to keep it in the scan column alone. In that case, on the Pagination tab, under Format:, choose Side Head. For the alignment, choose Top Edge. (You can experiment later.) Click Apply.

Question: I inherited this project from a previous Technical Writer, who set up the templates. The main chapter template has what looks like two columns, but the flow symbol appears in the right-hand (text) column, and I can't enter anything in the left-hand (scan) column. I want to use the scan column for titles, icons, and things like that, but I can't. How can I fix this?

Answer: Now you can go back into Paragraph Designer and use its various tabs to apply attributes to your header styles-space above and below, point size, color, and so forth.

Question: The technical writing department where I work has a library of templates, but I do not know how to use them. How do I apply a different template to a FrameMaker document?

Answer: Open both the FrameMaker template file and the document you want to apply it to. Then do this:

1. In your document (not the template file, or your fellow technical writers will get very mad at you), choose File -> Import -> Formats...
2. In the Import Formats dialog box, choose the template file from the Import from Document drop-down menu.
3. Click Import.
